The Million Mile Man
Danny Chew, 56, of Pittsburgh, has dedicated his entire life to cycling. Chew won the Race Across America twice and co-founded the Dirty Dozen, an annual race of Pittsburgh's thirteen steepest hills that attracts thousands of competitive cyclists from around the world.
On September 4, 2016, Chew was on a routine bicycle ride outside of Akron, Ohio when he suffered vertigo, veered off of the road and crashed. Chew was permanently paralyzed from the chest down and will never walk again. Following the accident, Chew contemplated suicide, but inevitably decided that he will continue his lifetime pursuit to reach one million miles, using a hand cycle.
